In laymen terms the neuromuscular system, or nervous system, can be described as the ‘mind-body connection’. The nervous system allows ones brain to relay information back and forth to the rest of the body. This constant communication allows for all human movement. As personal trainers and fitness instructors we impact our clients’ nervous systems on an everyday basis, most of the time without even being aware of it. Fitness professionals impact the nervous system because the sensory receptors (the part of the nervous system that ‘sense’ the outside environment), and motor neurons (the part of the nervous system that illicit movement), live in the muscles. As fitness professionals we make our clients use their muscles during every workout and therefore we have a unique opportunity to positively affect how their nervous system functions.
